Outline

To achieve this competency, individuals must be able to:

 1. Identify underground services – This involves knowledge of the different types of underground services, their location and markings, and the types of equipment and tools used to identify them.

2. Locate underground services – This involves the use of various techniques to locate underground services, including the use of maps, plans, ground penetrating radar, electromagnetic locators and sonar equipment.

 3. Protect underground services – This involves knowledge of the risks associated with working near underground services and the appropriate control measures that should be implemented to ensure safe work practices. These include conducting a risk assessment, obtaining relevant permits, implementing safe excavation practices, and properly marking and protecting the services.

 4. Communicate with stakeholders – This involves communicating with other workers, clients, local authorities and utility providers to ensure everyone is aware of the location of underground services and the risks associated with working near them.
